Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to be creative and instilled by art. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could continue her passion for theater and art during the day. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an effective tool for social change. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of social issues and taught the importance of speaking up by using the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspired her to write a movie about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was in her school. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the family home, and then looking through the waste of one of members of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was brought on straight after college, as an intern at one of the smaller studios. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also created a variety of promotions and lifestyle networks like The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
